(AUSTIN) —The Texas Residential Construction Commission has issued its first round of notices of violation to builders/remodelers in the area affected by Hurricane Ike. These initial six notices of violation are against builders that allegedly are not registered with the commission as state law requires. The commission expects additional notices of violation to follow as investigators continue their work in the region.
It is crucial for homeowners to realize that qualified work completed by a registered Texas builder is under warranty. The commission strongly advises consumers to thoroughly review a builder or remodeler’s record with the commission and check references before they sign any work contract or agreement.
Commission Executive Director Duane Waddill stressed the importance of working with a reputable, registered builder/remodeler. Waddill said, “The commission is warning Texans about storm chasers. These storm chasers are unregistered builders who will be off chasing the next storm in six months. When you need warranty work, you will not be able to reach them, they will not be here.”
Registered builders/remodelers are provided with a commission-issued registration certificate and/or wallet card to verify proof of registration. A consumer with any doubts or questions as to whether a builder/remodeler is registered should contact the commission.
The commission urges consumers to visit IkeResponse.org to find registered builders. The commission also has an online searchable database located on its Web site to verify builder/remodeler registration. For more information about a builder or for any commission-related questions, visit www.texasrcc.org or call 877-651-TRCC (8722).
