Building Commission Fines 23 Builders/Remodelers

(AUSTIN) — At its most recent meeting, the Texas Residential Construction Commission entered into agreed orders that included penalties against 23 builders/remodelers.
The commission fined 19 builders for registering late. The commission fined the remaining four builders for violations such as not paying the appropriate fees, failing to rectify bad checks submitted to the commission and failing to notify the commission of company changes as the law requires. The total penalties for all companies amounted to more than $43,380. The average fine was almost $1,900.
Four of the affected builders are located in the Central Texas/San Antonio area, seven in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and six in the Houston area. The rest are spread throughout the state. (View complete list).
Commission Executive Director Duane Waddill said that the fines send a simple statement to the industry.
Waddill said, “The commission makes information about any builder or remodeler that fails to meet its statutory obligations public. Certainly it’s in a company’s interest to maintain a positive public image. I encourage Texas consumers to thoroughly research builders and remodelers before they sign a contract for any work. Texans need to know that their builders and remodelers are living up to their statutory obligations. ”
Texas consumers can research whether or not a builder or remodeler is registered, if the state has found a defect as a result of a consumer complaint and the number of projects a builder or remodeler has registered by utilizing the public record search on the commission’s Web site (www.texasrcc.org).
